What We Believe…

Presbyterianism is one of the four largest Christian denominations in Ireland. We have a focus on the Bible as the authoritative word of God and the right of everyone to read it for themselves and on the sovereignty of God.

The purpose of this page is to lay out the basics of what we, as Christians, believe. Not everything can be fully explained within the scope of this page because knowing God is a journey, a relationship and an experience that cannot be replaced by any web-page or book.

… about God:

  • There is only one God.
  • He has always been and always will be.
  • He is the Creator, Sustainer and Lord of all.
  • God is everywhere, He knows all and is all-powerful.
  • God is not some impersonal force behind the universe but is a personal Spirit that loves us and wants relationship with us.
  • God is holy and good, a God of justice and righteousness.
  • God is Triune - the Holy Trinity of Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
  • God is most fully revealed to us in His incarnation as the man Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, God the Son, fully God and fully man.
  • We believe in the virgin birth of Christ, His atoning death on the cross, His resurrection and ascension.
  • Through faith in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ we have fellowship with God, adoption as His beloved children and salvation from our sins.
  • The Holy Spirit lives inside every Christian, received upon faith in Christ, to help us to grow closer to God, reforming us to be what we were always meant to be.

… about the Bible:

The Bible is the word of God, written by men inspired by the Holy Spirit. As the word of God the Bible has authority, it tells us what God desires from us. The Bible teaches us about God so we can know Him better and enjoy a relationship with Him. The Bible guides us in life.

… about the church:

The church is the body of Christ - a community and family of all those with genuine faith in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour. This is not confined by race, culture, age, level of ability, sex or denomination. We are all brothers and sisters in Christ.

The church is the first instalment of the Kingdom of God, a Kingdom where the will of God is done. As such it is the church’s job to make the world better, to heal its wounds and show it a better way of life, a way of love and grace.

… about individual Christians:

A Christian is anyone who accepts Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour. Christians are no better than anyone else, we are still sinners. Our sins are atoned for by the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross. Through faith in this sacrifice we have forgiveness of our sins and adoption as God’s own children. This amazing grace cannot be earned, it comes through faith and is the free gift of a loving God. Each and every Christian is a child of God and has a special role to play in the church. Christians are indwelt with the Holy Spirit of God to reform us and make us into the people we were always meant to be.

Every Christian should strive to love God with all their heart, soul, mind and strength and love their neighbour as themselves. That is what really matters in the life of a Christian.
